Dow Epoxy Unveils PROLOGIC™ Epoxy Specialty Materials for Electrical Laminates Shanghai, China - March 16, 2009 Dow Epoxy, a global business unit of The Dow Chemical Company and its affiliates (“Dow”) has unveiled a line of specialty flame retardant resins and systems, as well as additives and curing agents, for electrical laminates that can pass UL94 flammability requirements. These products, which will be marketed and sold under the brand umbrella of PROLOGIC™ Epoxy Specialty Materials, offer electrical laminate manufacturers and formulators innovative solutions designed to stay ahead of increased performance demands, environmental concerns and industry regulations or directives. “PROLOGIC Epoxy Specialty Materials represent a new solutions frontier for our customers,” explained Hideki Horito, global market manager for Electrical Laminates with Dow Epoxy. “Through this new brand of products, we are delivering materials designed to meet rapidly changing design and performance requirements and offer our customers a step up on their competitors.” Dow Epoxy has a long history of proven performance in delivering materials to the electrical laminates segment with its traditional line of standard and specialty D.E.R.™ Liquid and Solid Epoxy Resins and D.E.H.™ Hardeners. PROLOGIC Epoxy Specialty Materials further strengthen Dow’s overall solutions portfolio for formulators and laminators, and address a growing need for bromine-free laminates that can withstand the higher temperatures of lead free processing lines. Dow Epoxy also offers the industry’s only commercially available epoxy resins and curing agents for bromine-free laminates requiring a glass transition (Tg) temperature greater than 180 degrees Celsius. The 170DF and 170P bromine-free systems can reach UL 94 V-0 without addition of other inorganic fillers or flame retardant, although some fillers can be added to reduce system cost and improve coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). These systems are recognized by our customers to be one of the best filler-free and bromine-free systems commercially available in the market today. The new product line includes resins, systems and curing agents with a wide range of performance advantages, allowing formulators and laminators to select the benefits that best fit their applications. A few examples include:
“These products directly address critical market needs identified by our customers,” Horito said. “At the same time, we are looking to the future and working on emerging demands, such as enabling better signal integrity in wireless devices and providing formulators with more design options using epoxy resins, systems and other materials.” To accomplish this, the Company continues working with customers and other industry leaders on detailed R&D roadmaps that are driving development work at Dow Epoxy’s primary electrical laminate labs in Freeport, Texas and Shanghai, China.
